The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
